My Make-Shift Monster

The Project

My Make-Shift Monster was a project we delivered in partnership with ScrapAntics’ Family Club in October 2025. Over a week of sessions during the Autumn school break, we supported the families to work collaboratively to imagine, design, and create their own monsters from repurposed ‘scrap’ and recycled materials. The young people then brought their monsters to life in comics and illustrations, imagining how having a monster friend would change their day-to-day life.

We have published a 28-page zine titled My Make-Shift Monster featuring the groups’ amazing creations during this project. From "Starlish" aliens to the monster under your bed, this project demonstrates the immense creativity contained within a young person. From gluing  googly eyes to polystyrene balls and calling them "friend", these characters came alive.
